Feb Frog Pot (NHASA Site II)
NGR 52355262
A year or so
ago the management of CHANCELLOR FARM at Plummer Lane, Priddy has changed. A
lease on the farm has been granted to Somerset Wildlife Trust by the MOD.
Kate Lawrence,
the Mendip Hills Officer for the SWT was installed in the farm house and thanks
to her we were able to inspect some of the karst features on the farm,
something that probably had not been done since the 1960s. Several interesting
sites were noted, in particular Frog Pot, a small depression WNW of the farm.
This site was of particular note due to the nature of the visible fluted rock
around the depression. Permission was granted to investigate the site and along
with a WCC team that included Richard Whitcombe and Robin Taviner work was
started. Over a period of about a year a shaft was dug to a depth of around 20
feet with a small eyehole to the side leading to a further shaft of about 10
feet depth.

Whitcomber, Tav.
A very
complicated, labour intensive, hauling arrangement is used to get mud out
through the eyehole, however Eric survived the night at the bottom of the shaft
in spite of being bombarded with debris from the top of the shaft. RW & Tav
were “hard men” at the face. One trailer load of mud removed.

Chancellor Farm (Frog Pot)
Range closed so
NHASA outing to inspect & help with the dig. 6” of water at bottom of rift
& a block in roof now held up by pit props. 30 buckets of spoil removed
(some say 50) no sign of open passage but worth digging – mud in roof makes for
interesting digging.
